treating the boy to quizno's

doesn't take much to make him happy

baseball
a conversation about science fiction
a quizno's chicken sandwich

to get the quizno's, he first had to pass my quiz to see how much he knows

i asked him what he thought it meant to be "truly human"

he said that it meant we had big brains, have greater intelligence, and allows us to come up with all sorts of ideas

he apparently knows a lot

but if you ask him what he wants to do with that big head of his, he'll say,

"i just want to have fun"

Sure, they're cute

but just before this pic was taken, they were pulling eachother's hair out

sisters are always that way right? not just my girls

the one on the left, kelsea, is wicked smart.

the one on the right is a character and loves animals

both enjoy bossing their dad around like i was just a taxi driver. sometimes i'm treated only like an atm

i lub 'em

Going for walks with Nona

lately, each day for lunch i've been visiting nona. we go for a walk and talk.

we enjoy a stroll in the sun.

we stop at a yogurt shop. i order us some tart yogurt with blueberries, blackberries, almonds, peanuts

i can't tell you how much we both enjoy these walks

laughing, reminiscing, philosophizing, relaxing

i like that she gets her exercise. i like that she gets her vitamin D. i like that she eats something with calcium, etc

good for her bones and blood pressure

good for me too

i confess to a weakness to salt n vinegar

good example of what you should not eat as a snack. but at least it's "natural"?

i blame my boss. she gave it to me. so i "have" to enjoy every bite

Just some thoughts of being with Patricia at the beach

When I look into the eyes of this woman who shares my travels day by day, it is with a great feeling of joy but not without a certain element of undeservedness. At the same time that I find it incredible that such a person as she could love me, it is exactly that of which causes me to love her back.

In other words, I think she's borderline insane for loving me and I love her for it.

This picture was taken I believe in Orlando, Florida. She knows that if there is a place I love most, it's being at the beach. And we've been to a few of them together (Florida, Oregon, California, Mexico). I can't wait to visit more beaches. The beach... It's something about holding hands, running along in bare feet on sand, hearing waves crashing, seeing the kids playing in the waves, all of it says I was born to enjoy this place.

When I'm at the beach with my Patricia, I realize there's nowhere else I'd rather be.

just a song for chris

Walking in with guitar in hand
he'd play me a measure or two
Listen to this song, he'd say,
here is the way I play

My brother said he'd be a rock star,
his music would be famous one day
Hey kid, I'd tell him, you're young
but never get old, it's not fun

Don't worry about that, brother, he'd tell
you don't get the music's way
Music erases all wrongs,
nothing transcends like song

How I wish I could go back to that time
to say I get his reason and rhyme
I know, my brother, you're gone
but your beats, they'll always live on

Starbucks with my 11-year-old daughter

i rewarded my daughter with a "starbucks" this morning. it's sorta our thing. she doesn't get anything high in sugar unless she really earns it.

she ordered a vanilla creme frap and i ordered a tall espresso somethin-er-other.

we sat down to enjoy. i found this to be a perfect opportunity to philosophize freely about everything that didn't matter one single bit to her.

dad: "what's your purpose in life?"

daughter: "i don't know. i'm only 11."

dad: "well, you can't just go through life every day wondering what's going to be on the next hannah montana, can you?"

daughter: "i don't, dad."

dad: "so what's your future? what will you fight for? you've got lots of choices. end poverty. end child abuse. end hunger. human rights. women's rights. the environment. help find a cure for cancer. what will you do? a daughter of mine needs to do something, not do nothing. what do you wish for the world? what do you think the world needs?

daughter: "i think starbucks needs smaller cup sizes. how much caffeine is in your tall?"

dad: "too much."
