letter to my boy

Hi Aster,
I hope you have a wonderful birthday with everyone, and knowing how much we all love you.
They say that every boy needs a hero in life to emulate and for inspiration -- so with this book I offer you some of mine.
With the likes of Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Charles Darwin, and Stephen Hawking, you can't go wrong!
All of these great thinkers were your age once -- I think you remind me most of Darwin, who loved nature and exploring (read about "The Voyage of the Beagle" on page 94).
One day I hope to see you taking your curiosity for world discovery to the next level, and blazing your own pathway to personal enlightenment.
Your dad

absorbed
I had a dream just a minute ago and I have to blog it before I lose it. I was walking into a dark room and at the opposite wall there waa a tv with a small screen. The tv was on with a blank screen and I was staring at it, trying to make out whatever I could. I walked closer to it. Then closer. I felt myself drawn to it. I didn't see anything else in the room. Then, as I neared the screen I was suddenly absorbed into it. I could see myself (or what I thought was myself) on the tv banging on the screen as if trying to escape from the trap. That is all. I woke up.

At sunrise in Ramsey Canyon

this place is hummingbird heaven, and for my youngest daughter it's a page right out of her Fablehaven novel
we've spotted plenty of hummers, acorn woodpeckers, turkey with chicks, and what I think looked like a mockingbird the nephews ran off into the woods (as little boys should), but I hear now there was recently a bear sighting so I'm off to their rescue Sent from my iPhoneSunday, September 05, 2010

Anti-Aging with Aubrey de Grey
A couple of weekends ago I was in LA going to a meet-up with biomedical gerontologist Aubrey de Grey to discuss new research on aging. He talked about a new paper he co-authored with a few of his other biogerontologist colleagues.
So, I asked him to tell me more. Out of that meeting came a follow-up interview and this article published on KurzweilAI.net. Enjoy!

Hiking at Boulders with Patricia
Nevermind the politics, here's the Arizona I love.
First, we hiked around and actually caught a few glimpses of chuckwallas (and I thought there weren't many of them left in the wild).
Took a few pictures.
Then Patricia fell on her...
We ate some lunch.David

Easter eve dinner
Everything was delicious.
Patricia put together a perfect herb-spiced chicken, an avocado-tomato salad, and delighted us with these two yummy "roscas de pascua".
I tried to help out by making the concoction below.
The kids dubbed it Easter egg soup and no one ate it but me.

What are blood thinners and how do they work?
Blood thinners, or anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents, are drugs to thwart blood clotting of which could block flow of blood to your heart causing a heart attack or your brain causing a stroke.
Common anticoagulants are Coumadin, Warfarin and Heparin. It controls the rate in which clotting can occur and prevents them from forming inside blood vessels and the heart. It can also help prevent existing clots from enlarging.
Common antiplatelet agents are Aspirin, Plavix (clopidogrel bisulfate) and Ticlid (ticlopidene hydrochloride). As the name suggests, they keep platelets from aggregation to prevent possible clotting, specifically where an injury to a blood vessel may have occurred.
Blood thinners aren't associated with any specific nutrient deficiency, but are contraindicated taken with foods and supplements high in vitamin K1 (a clotting factor) or large amounts of vitamins E and C. They are also contraindicated with alcohol, certain herbs and teas, and other dietary agents that cause thinning of blood.
